The Power of UV: New Study Unveils Life-Extending Benefits of Sunlight

New Research Highlights UV Exposure Benefits

At TanSpa Tanning Salon, we’ve always emphasized the importance of Vitamin D for your well-being—and now science agrees! A recent study from the University of Edinburgh, published in Health & Place, has uncovered a strong connection between increased UV exposure and reduced mortality rates. Drawing from UK Biobank data, researchers discovered that individuals with greater UV exposure—whether from natural sunlight or safe solarium use—face a significantly lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

This study supports our belief at TanSpa: responsible tanning and moderate UV exposure enhance not only your appearance but also your overall health and longevity. To share these exciting insights, we’ve produced a short animated video that explains the key findings in an engaging and accessible way.

Know Your Skin Type

Before sunbathing OR sun-bedding, it’s vital to determine your skin type. There are six distinct skin types; each reacts differently to sun exposure.
The Fitzpatrick Scale  is a numerical classification schema for human skin color. It was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, a Harvard dermatologist, as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light.
Skin Type I

Usually bright white or pale skin, blue or green eyes, red hair and many freckles. This skin type always burns outdoors, never tans. NOTE: A person who is a true Skin Type I should avoid tanning indoors and outdoors.

Skin Type II

Light Beige skin, blue or green eyes; blonde or light brown hair and maybe freckles. This skin type has a strong tendency to sunburn outdoors, but sometimes tans.

Skin Type III

Light brown skin, brown eyes, and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors but always tans.

Skin Type IV

Light brown or olive skin, dark brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors and tans readily.

Skin Type V

Brown skin, dark brown hair and eyes. This skin type rarely burns outdoors and tans easily.

Skin Type VI

Black skin, black-brown eyes and hair. This skin type rarely sunburns outdoors.
